Best Budget Rimfire Rifles Under $300

With the recent explosion in the rimfire rifle market, it seems almost everyone wants to get into the game. Even big bore PRS shooters are using the rimfires to develop their shooting skills at a much lower cost and with less land required.

Of course they are looking for rifles equipped similarly to their big bore competition rifles and there are many offerings out there now to satisfy this desire.

But the average shooter who just wants to get started in competition or just wants a good rimfire rifle they can shoot and enjoy is probably not ready to drop a couple thousand bucks on a super tack driver.

After much research and experience shooting rimfire rifles for years, I have put together the information below to help that shooter make the right choice when looking for the best budget friendly rimfire rifle. All of these rifles have a price tag less than $300.

Henry Survival AR7

The Henry® US Survival AR-7 Semi-Auto Rimfire Rifle has been carried by bush pilots and backpackers for decades.

The AR-7 quickly and easily breaks down to store inside the buttstock to stow in the trunk of a vehicle, in a duffle bag, or anywhere one might need a 22 rifle in an emergency.

In a few seconds, without the use of tools, you can assemble the rifle by attaching the receiver to the stock, inserting the barrel, and hand screwing a threaded ring, which is permanently attached to the barrel, until the barrel is tightly fitted.

The receiver is made of alloy, and the rifled steel barrel has an ABS plastic coating for complete corrosion resistance. A rear aperture sight and a blaze orange front sight blade are rugged and reliable and allow precise shot placement. The AR-7 Semi-Auto Rimfire Rifle uses an 8-round magazine (comes with 2) for fast reloading.

  • Entire rifle stores inside buttstock
  • Assembles quickly without tools
  • Alloy receiver
  • Steel barrel
  • Blade front sight
  • Rear aperture sight
  • Two 8-round magazines

What to expect

All of these rifles are entirely capable of providing many years of hunting and shooting enjoyment. In fact, most of us started with one of the models mentioned above.

All of these rifles will deliver 1 inch to 2 inch groups at 50 yards with the right ammo and skill. Bulk ammo will tend to run toward the high end of the range while standard velocity in the 1000 fps range will perform the best.

The addition of a good optic will further improve accuracy out to 150 yards or more.

You can expect the infrequent jam which is mostly due to inconsistency of ammo as all of these rifles are well designed and well built. Still, as with any rifle, it will shoot best if you take the time to identify the ammo brand and configuration it likes best and keep it relatively clean.
